The doors to the ER opened and the paramedics rushed in a woman on a stretcher. Doctors came over to meet them. The woman was clearly in pain, she held her stomach. The doctors asked questions as they wheeled her in Trauma One. “Am I going to lose my baby?” “You’re pregnant?” A foreign doctor asked. “Yeah, I’m about three months along.” “Get someone down here from delivery!” The doctor ordered, then began to work on the patient a little more as they called up there. “What? What do you mean delivery?” She cried out. “I can’t have this baby now!” “I’m sorry the impact just too much. I’m sorry.” “I want my husband here. Please get him.” “How can we get a hold of him?” “He works down at the magazine a couple blocks away. Just call him and ask for Rick Skyler.” “What’s the number? We need the number.” Te foreign doctor told her, trying to keep fixing her up. “785-2115” “Carter, go tell Jerry to call that number, now!” Carter took his gloves off and threw them away and went out of the room and went to the main desk. “Jerry I need you to call 785-2115 and tell Rick Skyler that his wife is in the ER and we have to deliver the baby.” Jerry picked up the phone and dialed the number as he listened to him, Carter went back into the room, but before he did he bumped into someone. “Sorry. “No, it’s my fault.” She smiled then went into the trauma room with Carter. “Hi, I’m Abby Lockhart, from birth and delivery.” “I’m waiting for my husband.” Mrs. Skyler told her. “Please wait.” Abby looked at the foreign doctor and read his name tag. “Dr. Kovac? What do you say? Do I wait or what?” Dr. Kovac looked over at Abby then to the patient. “Wait, it shouldn’t be too much longer.” Abby looked at him then moved back so she wouldn’t get in their way. She watched them as they work on her. About twenty minutes later the husband came in the room. “What happened baby?” “I tripped over a cord and fell down the stairs and on my way here someone crashed into me and sped off.” “And you can’t do anything about the baby?” “There’s too much damage to the stomach.” Abby stepped in. “I can do an ultrasound to make sure.” She looked over at Dr. Kovac then to the patient and her husband. “Please…if you can.” Abby looked at Dr. Kovac for approval. Go a head, call them.” “She moved over to the phone and called up for them to bring down an ultrasound machine. As they waited Abby went to the patient and talked to her about the baby and their plans. Dr. Kovac stood back and watched her with the patient, as well as Carter. When the machine got there, Abby started it up and put the gel on her stomach after warming it up then moved the wand around and looked at the screen. “Dr. Kovac, can you come here?” He walked over there. “What is it?” He looked at the screen. “There’s still movement in there. The baby’s still alive.” She looked up at him. He looked a little more. “ I guess so, I made a mistake. Good call Lockhart.” “Thank you.” She smiled then looked at the mother. “Do you have an OBGYN?” “No, we’re still looking.” “Okay, well I can give you a name and number of a great one we have here.” “Can you do it?” She looked at her. “I can if you want me to…” Mrs. Skyler looked up at her husband. “What do you think? “I think it’s perfect.” He smiled at her. “Umm, okay. Well then I’ll need you to come in next week for a small check up to see how the baby is doing, okay?” She turned the machine off and gave her something to wipe the gel off of her stomach. She took it and wiped at her stomach. “Okay, thank you so much.” She smiled. “Take it easy okay?” “I will thank you.” Abby stood up to leave and looked at the doctors. “Is that all?” “Yeah, that’s all.” They all started to leave the room, leaving the patient in there to rest up. “I’m Luka Kovac.” He held out his hand. Abby shook it. “Abby Lockhart.” She looked over at Carter. “And you are?” “John Carter, nice to meet you.” “Same here, well I should be getting back up there. I’ll see you guys around.” With that, she left with the machine. Luka watched after her, then looked at Carter. “Stop drooling and get back to work.” Carter looked over at him. “Same to you.” He walked off and got a chart. Luka followed him and did the same thing

lol
About five months later Abby walked into the busy ER and went to the desk. “Hi, I’m Abby Lockhart.” She tried to say over the noise of the cries of pain. “I’m-“ “Yeah I heard you the first time, but if you can’t see I’m busy.” “I’m a third year, where do I go?” The woman looked at her. “Just a second.” He paged someone. “Okay just stay right here and someone will be over to help you in just a few minutes.” She took some folders and left. Abby stood there and leaned on the wall and looked at the bustle of things. A few minutes later someone walked up to her. “Are you Abby Lockhart?” Abby turned and looked at the person standing beside her. “Yes.” “Follow me then.” She began to walk off. Abby pushed off of the wall and followed her. As she walked behind her a patient who was on a stretcher along the wall reached out for her really fast. She jumped and let out a small scream. The woman leading her looked back and smiled. “That’s one thing you have to get used to around here. We have a lot of crazy people who come in.” “Yeah, I can see that…” She looked around then one of the doctors caught her eye. She knew she saw him around here before, but she couldn’t remember his name. She walked into the staff lounge with the woman. “Okay, on that table is you’re scrubs and lab coat, wear one or the other. You’re name tag is on there, there’s you’re locker, your name is already on it and here’s you’re locker combination and here’s you’re staff I.D. I’m Dr. Kerry Weaver and I’m your supervisor. Do you have any questions?” “Do I start right in, or what?” “No, not yet. As soon as Dr. Kovac is finished with his patient he will show you around then you can start in and help the older residents with what they need your help with. So there’s you’re clock, get ready and clock in and find Dr. Kovac.” “Okay.” She watched Dr. Weaver leave then she put her coat and scrubs in her locker and got her lab coat on then clocked in. She walked out, not paying attention, she bumped into something. “Oh I’m so sorry.” She looked up seeing the handsome foreign doctor. “It’s alright. I was just coming in there to see if you were ready for that tour.” He smiled. “Yeah, I’m ready.” “So you a new doctor coming in the middle of the term?” “No, I’m a third year.” “Oh, good deal.” “Okay, so I know I saw you here before, but what’s you’re name again?” He smiled at her. “Luka Kovac.” “Luka…What kind of name is that? I mean from where?” “I’m from Croatia. Luka is like Luke, here.” “That’s interesting. And I like that accent.” She smiled. “Thanks.” He smiled then showed her around the place a little more. After a while a trauma came in, he looked over at Abby. “You ready for you first ER patient? I’ll help you.” They went over to the patient and went and took him in Trauma Two. They began to work on the patient. Luka helped Abby with what she needed help with and told her how to do it and what to do. After what seemed like forever the patient became steady, they slowed their pace. “Wow, that was interesting.” “You did a great job.” He smiled and started to clean up. “Thank you.” She smiled. Carter came in and looked at them. “You two are already done?” “Yeah, Ms. Lockhart is a fast learner.” Carter looked at them then looked at Abby. “Aren’t you married?” He looked over at Luka then to Abby again. “Actually, I’m in the middle a divorce.” “I’m sorry to hear that.” Luka jumped in. Abby looked over at him. “Oh no, I’m fine with it, trust me. He wasn’t the best of guys out there. If that’s even what you want to call him.” “Sounds like you’re the one who filed for divorce.” Carter said looking at her. “We both did. We can’t stand each other anymore.” “Sorry about that…” “It’s okay, he just wasn’t the right one for me like everything thought.” She looked at them then left the room. Luka and Carter watched her then looked at each other, then walked out and got back to work. Mark Greene was looking at the board at the front desk when Luka walked up. “Is this you’re patient, Luka?” He held up a chart. Luka walked over to him and looked at the chart. “Yeah what’s wrong?” ”Nothing, except that he’s been waiting for a couple hours.” “Oh, yeah. I was showing our new third year around and then a trauma came in.” He took the chart. “Take care of this patient Luka.” “I’m on it, Mark.” He walked off and went into the room. Carter came up and took a chart and wrote his name on the board. “So have you asked Elizabeth yet?” Mark looked back at him. “No, I didn’t. There’s too many things going on, I have no time.” “So try to get a day off for both of you and then ask her on that day.” He looked over as Abby came behind the desk talking to one of the other doctors then he looked back at Mark. “How about you just care for your patients and don’t worry about my life okay?” He left. Carter watched him leave. “Wow, someone woke up on the wrong side this morning.” He mumbled. Dr. Weaver came over. “What’s everyone standing around for? Come on people, let’s clear this place out now. Some of these patient have been waiting for far too long.” With that, Cater got his chart and went to his patient. Weaver went over to Abby. “How are you holding up?” Abby looked at her. “Great, thank you.” “That’s good.” She got a chart and looked at it then gave it to her. “Care for this patient and before you dismiss him make sure you have another doctor look him over okay?” “Yeah, okay.” She took the chart and left. Weaver looked over at Jerry. “How are you holding up, big guy?” “Pretty good and yourself?” “As good as I can in this place. Think you can handle this for a little? It’s my lunch break. I can bring you back something if you want.” “Yeah, sounds great and just a salad.” He handed her some money. “Thanks.” He answered the phone. “No problem.” She took the money and left. Morris walked over. “Do we have a new doctor here?” “Not, really, she’s a third year.” “I was hoping I wasn’t losing my mind.” “You need one to lose it.” Jerry said as he was on hold. “Ha, ha, very funny.” “HELLO! I’ve been waiting here for three hours!” A patient yelled. “When am I going to get some help in this place?” Morris looked at him. “Now.” He went over to him. “Did you fill out the papers?” “They took them already.” “What’s you’re name?” “Jimmy Wilson.” Morris went over and looked for his chart. “Follow me.” He led him into a small room.

Abby finished splinting her patient’s finger. “Okay just sit tight and I’ll be right back.” She left the room and looked around for another doctor. She looked into a room and saw one finishing up. “Hi, could you check my patient for me, when you finish?” Mark turned around and looked at her. “Yeah, I’ll be in there in a minute. What room?” ”Curtain 5. Thanks.” She went back into the room. “It’ll just be a couple more minutes.” The patient looked over at her. “Thank you.” A couple minutes later Mark walked in. “Hi, I’m Dr. Greene.” He looked at the chart then checked her out. “You’re good to go. Good job Dr. Lockhart.” Abby smiled. “Thanks.” She signed the chart about Marks’ name. “You’re free to go.” She walked out and went back to the front desk, and put the chart in the dispose pike. Then stood there and looked around the ER. Jerry looked at her. “Don’t know what you got yourself into, huh?” She went over to him. “No, I’m glad I’m down here. It’s a rush, a good one, and I hope this won’t end.” “Why would it?” “My lovely soon-to-be ex. I put him through medical school and now it’s his turn to put me through and lately it’s been a struggle.” “Oh sounds awful.” “Tell me about it.” She took a chart and looked at it. “Did Dr. Weaver tell you what I’m limited to by myself?” “Nope.” “Okay.” She walked off and went to her patient. Luka saw her walking off as he finished his patient he went over to her. “Hey, I forgot to ask you. Did you’re patient have her baby already?” Abby looked up at him. “My patient? Oh, yeah like a week ago.” “That’s good…are the mother and baby fine?” “As healthy as can be.” “What patient are you doing now?” “Umm, Mr. Kelly, he has a deep incision.” “Ouch.” “Yeah, tell me about it.” She stopped at her room. Luka stopped with her. “Right so I’ll let you go do that. If you need any help then you can call me.” He looked at her then walked off. Abby watched him then went into the room. After she finished with her patient and had someone check on him for her she went up to the front desk. There was a new resident she hadn’t seen before. Jerry was eating his salad then called Abby over to him. “See that younger guy with the scrubs on?” Abby looked over at him then back to Jerry. “Yeah why?” “That’s Dave Malucci.” “Okay, what about him?” “Just a fair warning, he may hit on you. He does that to every female in this place. And he’ll keep doing it.” She looked at him then over to Dave. “Oh really? Well I can handle myself. Thanks for the heads up.” She smiled. “No problem.” He answered the phone. Abby walked over and got another chart. Malucci looked over and saw her, he moved over and was about to say something but, she beat him to it. “Don’t even start.” She looked at him. “I’m so not interested.” Dave looked at her shocked. “How do you-“ “I have a sixth sense about these kinds of things.” She smirked then grabbed the chart and walked off. Malucci watched her then walked over to Jerry. “You told her didn’t you?” Jerry looked at her. “What? And interfere with you’re game? I don’t think so.” “You’re the one who keeps saying I have any.” “I wonder why. You chase them away before even hitting first base.” Malucci narrowed his eyes at him. “Have I ever told you I didn’t like you much?” Luka came up. “What did you do, try to get with Ms. Lockhart?” Jerry laughed. “That’s what happened.” “She was smart and walked off on you huh?” “Hey, I have game okay?” Luka laughed. “Keep telling yourself that, it might happen.” “You guys aren’t nice to me.” Malucci said as he took a chart and walked off. Jerry laughed. “You should have seen it Kovac. She got him good, he couldn’t get a word in and she flat out told him she wasn’t interested.” “Well I wish I was here then.” “You like her already don’t you?” “Like who?” “Lockhart. Not that I don’t blame you, she’s something else.” Luka looked at him. “Yeah I like her, as a friend.” Jerry smiled. “You know you want to date her and get to know her better.” “You like to get into everyone’s business don’t you?” “Only when I know I’m right about something.” Luka looked at him then walked off after signing his chart. “I knew it!” Jerry called out. Carter came up. “You knew what?” He laid his chart on the counter and started to sort his papers. “Kovac likes Lockhart.” Carter looked up at him. “He actually told you that? As in it came from him or from what you think is true?” “It didn’t come from him, but you can tell, you also can tell you like her too. Man, thank ER is going to get so interesting.” “I don’t like her like that okay?” Abby walked in behind him. “Like who like that?” Carter jumped a little. “No one.” Abby kind of laughed. “Did I scare you?” Jerry looked at them and smiled as Carter looked down. “No, yeah a little.” “Okay well in that case, I’m sorry about that.” “Don’t be.” Jerry chimed in. Carter looked at him then to Abby and back down to his chart. After a minute of silence, Abby took her chart and another piece of paper she got from under the counter and went into the medicine room, where Luka just happened to be. “Oh, hello.” Luka looked back at her. “Hello.” He looked at the medicine and got some of what he needed out. “So do you like it down here?” “Umm, yeah. It stays busy, that’s for sure.” “It can get a lot busier.” “Oh, I don’t see how.” She smiled. Luka smiled back at her. “Yeah, just wait for the busy days.” She smiled and then looked for what she needed. “Where’s the Morphine?” Luka reached over and opened a door. “Right in there.” “Oh, okay. Thank you.” “So, uh, how long have you been married?” “It would have been about four years.” “That’s a pretty long marriage.” “Yeah, but half of that time I wouldn’t really call it a marriage.” “It was that great?” He smirked. “If it was that bad, why’d you stay in it?” “We promised each other no matter what, we’d put each other through medical school and I wanted to make sure I did my part of the deal.” “So what, he’s not going to go on with his?” “Oh, I’ll make sure he does. I love it here.” He smiled. “I hope so too. Well I need to get to my patient. I’ll talk to you later.” “Okay, bye.” She finished up with her medicine then wrote down what she needed to have down. Luka left the room, she looked back at him and watched him leave then gathered her things and left.
